Global Grant Scholar Alexa Baker

Alexa Baker, Global Grant Scholar for 2025-2026, completed her studies and will be awarded a Master of Arts in Diplomacy from the University of Nairobi, Kenya on September 18.  She studied Conflict Prevention and Management, International Negotiation and Mediation, and Diplomacy in Multilingual and Multicultural Contexts.  Her thesis “The Role of Language in Diplomatic Negotiation” provides insights into how linguistic inclusivity can strengthen the peace process in fragile societies. She plans to work in the area of peace building and international development.

Alexa was the first candidate to be named a Global Grant Scholar for the second year of a two year program. She was sponsored by the RC of Carlisle and RC of Nairobi.  She surprised the Nairobi Rotarians by giving a 20 minute presentation in Swahili.  The Kenyans did not expect this language ability from an American.

Alexa is a graduate of Cumberland Valley High School, in Mechanicsburg, and Howard University, Washington, DC, where she majored in Swahili.

1700 Books by November 22

Our District 7390 Early Literacy Book Drive is underway, and we have a big goal ahead of us: 1,700 books by November 22!

We've collected our first 50 books, which means we have 1,650 to go! Why 1,700? At the conclusion of the drive, the books will be distributed to seven early learning centers across our seven-county District. This will provide nearly 250 new books per location to help replenish center and classroom libraries and put more books into the hands of young children and their educators.

Three Ways YOU Can Help

  1. Collect Books as a Club - Collect new board books and picture books at one or several club meetings. When you're ready, contact me to schedule a pickup.

  2. Partner with a Local Bookstore - Take the book drive into your community! Shared the attached flyer with a local bookstore and ask them to place a collection box near the register, giving customers the opportunity to purchase and donate a children's book at checkout.

  3. Shop the Amazon Registry - Not sure what to get? Don't have time to shop? Select a book from our Amazon Registry and it will be delivered directly to me and added to the District collection. Every book gets us one step closer to reaching - and exceeding our goal!

Save the Date: Book Drive Celebration - Sunday, November 22 | 4:00-5:30 PM at Appalachian Brewing Company | Harrisburg

Join us as we celebrate reaching across our District to support early literacy and recognize the seven early learning centers selected to receive this year's books. RI Zone Director Marty Helman will be on hand to celebrate with us!

Gettysburg Participates in Day of Caring

A strong contingent of club members along with a District 7390 Assistant Governor and many others performed multiple activities in support of local United Way’s Day of Caring last Saturday, September 12th.  Our club prepared collection boxes for an upcoming food drive, inventoried school supplies, and moved truckloads of boxes from UW’s old accommodations to their new location at the Outlets Mall.  Members enjoyed the comradery while providing valuable support to the annual event, celebrating after by joining up for coffee at Bantam Roasters in town.  Rotary has a long and proud history of support across Adams County.  Join us for lunch first and third Mondays at noon in the Gettysburg Hotel.
