Rotarians from York North-East-Downtown-Uptown had the opportunity to mentor 5th and 6th graders at Junior Achievement’s BizTown, located in downtown York.  BizTown is a hands-on educational experience that brings business and personal finance to life for students.  BizTown creates a fully simulated community where the students step into real-world roles and responsibilities for a day.

Rotarians assisted students in operating businesses throughout the town. Each company includes a CEO, CFO, and team members who must collaborate to successfully run their operation. Early in the day, each business takes out a bank loan — and the goal is clear: work together, meet expectations, and pay off that loan by the end of the day.

But the learning doesn’t stop there.

On the personal finance side, every student:

  • Receives two paychecks
  • Manages a checkbook register
  • Uses a debit card
  • Makes purchasing decisions
  • Tracks spending responsibly

It’s a powerful, real-world lesson in budgeting, teamwork, leadership, and career exploration. Junior Achievement holds 147 BizTown days each year, serving more than 13,600 students served annually.
