Rotary World Polio Day

October 24, 2025 – Together, We End Polio

District 7390 Clubs are asked to go post the World Polio Day Video available here on your Facebook and Instagram page throughout the month of October.

Why World Polio Day Matters

  • Polio is a paralyzing and potentially deadly disease.
  • It is incurable, but preventable through vaccination.
  • Thanks to Rotary and our partners, cases have been reduced by 99.9% since 1988.

Rotary’s Leadership

  • Launched PolioPlus in 1985 – the first global initiative to eradicate polio.
  • $2.1 billion raised and millions of volunteer hours donated.
  • Partners with WHO, UNICEF, CDC, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and GPEI.

Where We Stand Today

  • Polio remains endemic in only 2 countries: Afghanistan and Pakistan.
  • Until it is gone everywhere, children everywhere remain at risk.
  • Rotary’s motto: “We’re This Close to Ending Polio.”

Successful District Learning Assembly Completed

The first ever on-line Fall District Learning Assembly was deemed a success after running for four nights from Sept 22-25 that included 8 classes with 41 Rotarians taking 129 person-class sessions. Learners were able to attend one or all of the classes presented by fellow District 7390 Rotarians ranging in age and experience that helped shed light, insights and information on multiple topics.  These eight sessions were Growing Membership, Managing Conflict, Leading Service Projects, Fundraising, Public Image, Social Media, Club Position Training and President/Pres-Elect Forum. Surveys gathered throughout the week included comments such as, “Excellent and engaging ideas…. speakers were prepared with concise presentations…. sessions were time conscious… on point.”

If you wish you could have attended, there’s great news! The presentation slides for all the sessions and a majority of the presentations were recorded.  They have all been posted to the district website, and you can click HERE to easily access them at your convenience!

The District Learning Committee, led by Past District Governor, Fred Gellert, has already started planning the upcoming spring “in-person” DLA. The committee meets monthly via Zoom on the first Wednesday at 4 PM. They would welcome YOU as a member to join in the excitement of Sharing and Learning All Things Rotary.

The Committee would like to thank all who attended, instructed, advertised, or otherwise supported the learning assembly. They are excited to know that District 7390 clubs will benefit from this effort.

Clubs that wish to have a learning topic presented can contact District Learning Facilitator PDG Fred Gellert (fredgellert@gmail.com) to discuss scheduling.

Rotary Reads Program in York

On Tuesday, September 30, 750 Pre-K students in and around York City will be gaining valuable reading skills and resources. Members of the Rotary Club of York are visiting six schools as part of their "Rotary Reads" program.

Experts say early childhood is the most important time to develop literacy skills, with research showing 88 percent of kids who fall behind in those early years, never catch up. Volunteers are sharing the story, "Arlo Draws an Octopus," with the students.

"The book encourages children to embrace their creativity and see the beauty in their efforts, despite the outcome," said Rotary Club of York President, Wilda Reahm.

Each student also gets a free copy of the book to read with family and friends. "Arlo Draws an Octopus" was also selected for the 2024-2025 Pennsylvania "One Book Early Literacy Project" by the PA Department of Education.

Harrisburg Peace Garden Honoring PDG John Judson

The Harrisburg Peace Garden Association invites you to attend a reception supporting the Harrisburg  Peace Garden and honoring the memory of

John Judson, MD

Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2025, 5:30 - 7:30 pm West Shore Country Club, Camp Hill

Thirty-five years have passed since the founding of the Harrisburg Peace Garden. Now an iconic symbol of the city and the region, it has served as a gift to the community and a call for peace and good will since 1990. Now it’s time again to celebrate the spirit that led Jim and Sandy Jones and Physicians for Social Responsibility to establish the Garden with the city’s blessing, and the people responsible for its endurance.

This year we will celebrate the memory and contributions of John Judson, MD, a critical figure in providing for the the Foundation’s partnership with the Rotary Club of Harrisburg. A surgeon, John practiced general surgery for several years before his residency in cardio-thoracic surgery. He taught and practiced in various places around the country before settling in Harrisburg. He had a special love of Haiti, where he served three months of his residency. John and his wife, Ann Marie, lived there for two years when he served as Director of Surgery at Haiti’s Hospital Albert Schweitzer, and he returned many times to volunteer his services to Haiti’s neediest patients.

A member of Rotary for many years, he served as President of the Rotary Club of Harrisburg and later as District Governor. Also a member of the local chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility, he was instrumental in procuring Rotary’s partnership in handling aspects of the Peace Garden’s long-term funding and volunteerism. An avid pilot, he also flew Angel Flights for people needing transportation for hospital care. Married to Ann Marie Judson and father to their five children, he continued his volunteerism at Bethany Village, where he started the Ecology team and helped residents with their technology needs.

Please join us in remembering John’s dedication to peace through his medical mission work and his efforts on behalf of the Peace Garden. Proceeds will support the work of the Harrisburg Peace Garden Association.

Join us on Oct. 15 for heavy hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar, a good time - and a chance to support the Peace Garden and honor John’s memory!
