Each year, York North Rotarians bring the joy of reading to first-grade classrooms across the Northeastern School District. The Reading to Kids program has been a beloved literacy initiative for many years, sustained by dedicated Rotarians who share both their time and their love of books.
This year, leadership for the project was taken on by Rotarian Deb Perry, who coordinated volunteers to visit four schools — Conewago, Orndorff, Mount Wolf, and York Haven — reaching an impressive 277 first-grade students.
A Book to Keep — and a Memory to Treasure
Each reader selects a favorite children’s book to share with their class. After story time, every student receives their very own copy of this year’s featured title, High Fly Guy.
“The children are so excited,” said Perry. “They already know and love Fly Guy, so they’re thrilled to get a book of their very own.”
The delight on their faces reminds Rotarians that literacy is more than a lesson — it’s an opportunity to open minds and nurture imagination.
Carrying On a Proud Tradition
Although this is Deb Perry’s first year leading the program, she is grateful to continue a legacy that has been passed down through York North Rotary for decades. “Fortunately, our club has always had people willing to keep the program going,” she shared. “It’s wonderful to see so many members volunteering to make it happen year after year.”
Rotary in Action
The Reading to Kids project embodies Rotary’s mission of Service Above Self by encouraging literacy, building community connections, and inspiring the next generation of readers. Through programs like this, The Rotary Club of York-North continues to make a meaningful difference — one story at a time.
The York East Rotary Club hosted its annual Pints for Polio fundraising event on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at the Victory Athletic Association in York. The evening drew strong community support, raising nearly $7,000 to help eradicate polio through Rotary International’s PolioPlus Foundation. Guests gathered for an evening of camaraderie, entertainment, and charitable giving. The event featured a lively auction of sports memorabilia, event tickets, and gift packages, along with games and raffles that kept attendees engaged throughout the night. The funds raised will contribute directly to Rotary International’s PolioPlus program, which has been at the forefront of the global effort to end polio. Since its inception in 1985, the program has helped reduce polio cases by over 99% worldwide through widespread immunization and public health initiatives. York East Rotary President, Kris Pollick, expressed gratitude to the sponsors, donors, and volunteers who made the event a success. “Every dollar raised brings us closer to a world free of polio. The continued enthusiasm and generosity of our community are what make this event so impactful each year,” they said. The York East Rotary Club has long supported Rotary International’s mission of service above self—locally and globally—and Pints for Polio remains one of its cornerstone charitable events.
