Message from DG Una Martone
Dear Fellow Rotarians,

Please accept these sentiments of thanksgiving and my sincere wishes that each of you will enjoy bountiful blessings as we start the holiday season.  Maybe some of these sentiments will apply to your own Rotary journey and provide you with an opening to thank the people with whom you share fellowship every week…
  • I am exceedingly thankful for the Rotarians who have welcomed me into their clubs, their events and activities and shown me a greater capacity for serving, caring, and giving than I had previously known.
  • I am thankful for the Rotarians who lead and who motivate & inspire others to think big, work hard, and seize opportunities to make a difference in the lives of others, their clubs, communities, and the world.
  • I am thankful for the Rotarians who have prayed for my safe travels and well-being during an extremely active and eventful few months.
  • I am thankful for my family members who have encouraged me through early mornings and late nights, sacrificed some family time so that I could participate in Rotary events, and taken up extra responsibilities at home that I’ve neglected.
  • I am thankful for my team at work and their efforts to stretch out of their comfort zones in my absence which is more often this year than in the past.  I am thankful for our District 7390 Executive Secretary, Melissa Bruck, and her dedication to our collective success as an organization.
  • Most of all, I am thankful for this opportunity to experience the role of District Governor and thankful for this very moment in time when so many lives are intersecting with mine and fulfilling me with an abundant source of hope and new friendships that will last a lifetime.
Happy Thanksgiving to you all.

Yours in  Rotary,

Una Martone
District Governor 2017-18

Shout Outs from the DG
Shout Out to the Rotary Club of Shippensburg on receiving the Rotary International Presidential Citation for attaining goals in specific activities such as entering goals in Rotary Club Central, showing a gain in membership, inducting new members under the age of 40, achieving certain levels of giving to The Rotary Foundation and MORE during the 2016/17 year.  The Rotary Club of Shippensburg was the ONE and ONLY club in District 7390 to earn this distinction and was presented with an award during the November 15 Foundation Dinner.  I know you all worked hard for this recognition and it is very well deserved.  Congratulations.

Shout Out to the Rotary Club of Harrisburg for their unique fundraising effort ~ auctioning off Past Club President Betty Hungerford’s famous lemon cake.  These two cakes raised a quick $600.  Coupled with auctioning a house party, an art class from the Art Association of Harrisburg, tickets to Elegant Progressions dinner from the Historic Harrisburg Association, the Rotary Club of Harrisburg raised a couple thousand dollars to supplement their scholarship awards.

Shout Out to the Rotary Club of Mechanicsburg for their support of the Mechanicsburg Area Meals on Wheels.  Pictured here is President Amy Bockis with Karen Stine, Executive Director Meals on Wheels.  The Rotary Club provided a brand new meat slicer (with help from a District Grant)  valued at $5,400.  In addition the Rotary Club of Mechanicsburg provided a $400 check to help support the work of the non profit organization.  Not bad for a 28 member club!

Shout Out to the Rotary Club of Harrisburg Keystone for hosting a dynamic Rotary Means Business event which garnered the participation of nearly 50 attendees, many of whom are NOT current Rotarians and are NOW interested in joining.  The Rotary Club of Harrisburg Keystone was able to secure a sponsor for the event, Appalachian Brewing Company, as well as a media sponsor, the Central Pennsylvania Business Journal.  Well done and for any of you Facebookers and LinkedIn users out there, don’t forget to give the Rotary Means Business 7390 pages a like!

Shout Out to the Rotary Club of Colonial Park… they welcomed me with the Jazz Ensemble from Central Dauphin East High School.  That was a first!  Sorry the picture is fuzzy, but what an uplifting afternoon!  Thank you.

Shout Out to Rotarian Bob McClenathan of the Rotary Club of Lancaster for receiving the Citation for Meritorious Service from The Trustees of The Rotary Foundation in honor of Bob’s unyielding efforts in participating in over 20 grant missions; supporting others in writing grants; facilitating foundation training, and much more.

Shout Out for 2016-2017 Rotary Foundation Giving Awards
The final Shout Out is for all of the Rotarians and Rotary Clubs in District 7390 who have made this November, Foundation Month, so fantastic by participating in the Foundation/Grants Training on November 4 and The Foundation Dinner on November 15.  Thank you for your participation and CONGRATULATIONS to all of the award recipients, some of whom are pictured below.

At the 2015 Rotary Foundation Dinner, PDG Kevin Cogan instituted a new award called Global Grant Service Streamers. Just like the military services launch campaigns on the battlefield, so too Rotary International has launched campaigns for which global grants are made available and applied in six areas of focus. The military services are awarded varying color streamers for successful campaigns. District 7390 is proud to award streamers to Rotary clubs which successfully apply their time, talent, and resources in support of the areas of focus. The following Clubs received streamers for participation in Grants in 2016-17:  York (India) Water & Sanitation, Lancaster (Uganda) Medical, Hanover (Philippines) Medical, York-East (Uganda) Medical.

Nominations for District Governor 2020-21
The time has come to begin the nominating process for our District Governor 2020-21.  In this way we will continue our three-year projection for District 7390’s leadership.
I encourage all D7390 Clubs to survey your membership and suggest a qualified candidate for the District Governor Nominee 2020-21. Suggestions must be made in the form of a resolution adopted at a regular Club meeting and certified by the Club Secretary. You may suggest a Rotarian from another Club so long as you first obtain the concurrence of the Club where the proposed candidate is a member.
Every club has an outstanding leader who could be a potential District Governor. Look around and ask yourself, who is that person in my club? It is the person who is a good leader, interested, involved, gives financially to Rotary and The Rotary Foundation and is helpful to other members. Ask that person about his or her interest in serving as District Governor. We all need to give encouragement and “plant the seed” for others to move forward.
When submitting a candidate for 2020-21 Governor, the following must be submitted: the Club resolution and the Governor Nominee Data Form (DG App 2020-21).

West Shore Presents Dictionaries
Dictionary presentations filled the week of November. 6-9 for the Rotary Club of the West Shore.  At Hillside Elementary School, New Cumberland, on November 9, Rotarians Sheldon Munn, Dave Witmer, Graeme Goodsir, and David Hiebert were joined by the Munn and Witmer spouses. Many combinations of supporters appear like magic at the various schools. But a last minute change in schedule reduced the crowd of witnesses to one--Bernie Dugan and George Connolly at the first presentation of the week--9 AM Monday morning at Newberry Elementary.  1,200 third grade students in the West Shore District got their own dictionaries through this literacy program. Photo courtesy of Rotarian David Hiebert (right).

Mechanicsburg Club Supports Meals on Wheels

Supporting Mechanicsburg Area Meals on Wheels

The Mechanicsburg Rotary Club as part of its ongoing support, presented a new Hobart Automatic Meat Slicer to the Mechanicsburg Area Meals on Wheels (MAMOW) at its kitchen on November 8th. Funding for the $5,400 slicer was provided by the club's project fund plus a $2,500 grant it had applied for from the Rotary Foundation via its local Rotary District 7390.

The old meat slicer was about 17 years old and was in need of major maintenance or replacement. Replacement was preferable due to design changes which improve operational efficiency (automation) and provide for easier cleaning. MOW prepares and delivers over 36,000 meals annually to the home bound who are unable to prepare meals for themselves. MAMOW's meals are home-cooked, 1 hot meal and 1 cold. They have 1 paid executive director who oversees the meal preparation with over 200 volunteers, cooking, packing, and delivering. The service area includes 2 Boroughs and 6 Townships. There are over 120 clients currently and there is a need to serve more as the populations in the service areas continue to grow. MAMOW does not accept any state or federal funds.

The Rotary Club of Mechanicsburg has supported MAMOW for many years through funds contribution and purchase of items/equipment. Members have also served a food deliverers. The Rotary Club also presented a $400 check to MAMOW on Nov. 8th. The funds were raised during the recent completed Rotary Ox Roast where meal tickets could be designated to benefit MAMOW.
